This is a vintage Soviet Union celestial globe, circa 1968. Celestial globes are three-dimensional representations of the night sky, depicting stars and constellations as they appear from Earth. They served several purposes, including constellation identification, maritime navigation, and use as educational tools. Before the widespread adoption of radio navigation in the late 20th century, these globes were commonly used to help train and guide navigators. This particular model was likley used for maritime navigation for Soviet submarines and boats during the Cold War.

Prior to modern technology, they were valuable instruments for determining one’s position by referencing the night sky. Celestial globes have a long, rich history dating back to the 2nd century CE, with the Roman Sculpture Farnese Atlas, depicting the oldest surviving celestial globe.

The boxed legend explains star brightness by denoting different symbols, stating:

"Дo Вeл. 1.4

От 1.5 дo 2.4

От 2.5 дo 3.4

пepeм вел

Эпоха 1968"

Which is translated to:

"Up to magnitude 1.4

From 1.5 to 2.4

From 2.5 to 3.4

Perem vel (shortened Russian phrase meaning variable)

Epoch 1968"

Stellar magnitude has an inverse relationship with star brightness. Stars with a magnitude of ≤ 1.4 are very bright. Epoch 1968 is in reference to the year the star positions were taken, as they change throughout time.
