German Travelers' Horizontal Sundial, c.1840

A mid-19th century German Travelers' Horizontal Sundial. Housed in Mahogany with a brass hook-locking mechanism; This compass features a paper-faced dial and is marked in 30-minute intervals. Made for 48 degree latitude, marked with 'N-O-S-W' cardinal directions. Isogonic variance of 23 degrees. Half-blued steel needle on jeweled pivot. Featuring an interesting, ornate brass folding gnomon and engraved hour ring. German made, circa 1840.
