Founded by Isaac Sherman in the 1870's, 'Sherwoods Ltd.' was a British maker of oil and nautical lights through the early 19th century. By 1904, they were trading under 'Sherwoods & Son Ltd.', and were acquired by Linley & Co. in 1920.
Duplex burners were first invented & patented by Joseph & James Hinks in 1865. At that time, a patent was issued for 14 years. After 1880, other light-makers were able to begin incorporating double burners. This duplex light was among the first offered by Sherwoods Ltd. and is featured in their 1900 catalogue.
