1790 Kleininger Diptych

Made in Fürth, Germany circa 1790 by Johann Georg Kleininger (1763-1824), featuring ornate design with beautiful hand-coloured detail. Featuring a gazeteer on cover for 22 American & European cities. String gnomon designed for use near 50-degree latitude. Signed 'Kleininger' on compass rose. Original, authentic, and functioning piece. 

The exact detail-work in this piece is amongst Kleininger's rarest designs, with only one other exact model being known (now on display at The Adler Planetarium!). Possibly a prototype (or artist's) model for a further embellished version. Such as those featured in The Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard University's Collection of Scientific Instruments.
