Horizontal Inclining Sundial by Matthew Berge
Horizontal Inclining Sundial by Matthew Berge
A scarce Horizontal Inclining Sundial, Signed 'Berge, London'. Three footed compass with two glass bubble levels, locking needle, jeweled pivot. English made, early 19th century. Matthew Berge was foreman to esteemed Jesse Ramsden for over three decades until his death in 1800.
After which, Berge continued Ramsden's remaining work, which was signed 'Berge, London' and 'Late Ramsden' from 1800-1805. This piece dates from 1805 until Berge's own death, in which time this sole signature of 'Berge, London' was used.
There are conflicting dates of his death. The Science Museum Group lists his date of death as 1811, while 1819 is listed by others like the Royal Museums Greenwich.
