Handsome mid-19th century French Graphometer by Santi Opticien. A scarce, expertly-made piece. Atop the mount sits a 180-degree semicircular limb that is graduated every degree and numbered every 10 degrees. This graphometer features a fixed and adjustable sighting-adilades. Original & functional compass with half-blued needle on jeweled pivot, graduated every 2 degrees, numbered every 20 degrees. This piece was originally designed for tripod-mounted use; currently displayed on (and sold with) a removable ornate brass stand.
Signed 'Santi a Marseille'.
Santi Opticien a Marseille (Santi Optician in Marseille), founded by Augustin Santi (1805-1886) in the titular French city in 1830 to create optical, marine and geodesic instruments. Their quality and craftsmanship repeatedly won them first-place medals during the Universal Exhibitions (world's fairs) of Paris, Marseille and London.
Graphometers were instrumental to the world we have today; aiding in delineating territory, building fortifications, planning cities, and creating accurate maps.
