Late 18th Century Russian Orthodox "Skladen" (Religious brass traveling plates). Detail on front and back reveals this as part of a triptych or polyptych. Solid brass plate with incredible colored enameling and ornate Cyrillic text throughout.

On it's interior, an icon of the Twelve Great Feasts- this panel depicts: The Resurrection/Anastasis (The Descent into Hell), The Ascension of Christ, The Old Testament Trinity, & The Dormition of the Virgin.

On it's exterior, a slanted footrest empty cross; with the slant symbolizing the repentant thief on the right, and the condemned thief on the left . Tools used to torture Christ can be seen next to the cross- a sword and vinegar-soaked sponge. Adam's skull sits at the base of the cross. Jerusalem's walls and towers can be seen in the background. "In Jesus' absence from this scene, it is the cross which represents him."
