An incredibly rare 18th Century Ornate Japanese Scaphe Dial; Comprised of Gold Vermeil, with detailed filigree, and embellished with precious stones. Featuring Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Seed Pearls, & Red coral cabochons, this folding bowl dial is an example of the finest Japanese craftsmanship of the 1700's. Compass features a blued-needle (still functional) on jeweled pivot, original glass, & carrying ring to be worn on a pocket chain or necklace. 

The bowl dial & compass fold into the sterling silver body,  each compass is engraved with hour indicators, bowl dial features a silver vertically-set, center pin gnomon. 

A piece of this nature would only have been crafted for the days' elite, and was made to be used practically for travel or everyday life. 

Most similar known model featured in the Royal Museums Greenwich.
