A rare, early 19th Century French Travelers' Horizontal Sundial. Housed in a folding, hook-lock Mahogany case. Paper face dial graduated every degree, with Cardinal Points marked (N-E-S-O). Half-blued steel needle on jeweled pivot, with folding brass gnomon, engraved brass hour ring, and locking bar. Functioning piece. Unsigned, circa 1830.

Designed for 49 degree latitude (Paris), this compass was interestingly designed for export to the New World (French Canada). Marked is an Isogonic variance of 23 degrees East (wherein 23 degrees would need to be subtracted from Magnetic reading to find true North). With these specific variances, we can calculate this compass was intended for use near Newfoundland, Nova Scotia. Please note- Original glass shows slightly cracked.
