Incredibly Rare Late 18th Century Original David Beringer Folding Diptych. Original & functional piece. Complete with original string gnomon, hand-coloured paper detail, glass, and compass. Signed 'David Beringer' on compass card. 

From Nuremburg, Germany; David Beringer, was a renowned master craftsman of scientific instruments & compasses (compassmacher) during the late 18th & early 19th centuries. 

Original hand-coloured detail is in excellent condition, with vibrant colors and minimal wear from age. Featuring a gazeteer on cover for 48  European cities (table), and 3 American cities (bottom of border). String gnomon designed for use near 40 degree latitude. Blued-steel needle on brass pivot. 8 Cardinal points.
