Late Byzantine Bronze Rotating Double-Spout Lucerna

Late Byzantine Bronze Rotating Double-Spout Lucerna

An incredibly interesting and rare Byzantine-era Rotating Bronze Double-Spout Lucerna (Venetian Lamp). Acquired in Belgium. Circa 1700 (possibly earlier). Patterned outer edge, with 3 beaded rings cast into the lid terminating in an acorn-style finial. Unpolished with patina as origally acquired. Semi-circular rack on bottom of fount. The font is lifted up and rotated, when released the teeth engage a steel tooth at the base of the yolk. Turned, bronze stem on circular base with semi-raised edge. Two double-lipped spout (this was prominent in many bronze lucerna's from 600-1600).

Bronze extinguisher and tweezers are attached by  hand-made link-chain. A rounded 5" base supports ornately knurled-tube with adjustable housing for reservoir kettle. Topped by an ovular handle for ease of use. Originally used with whale oil which was an expensive necessity of the day;  this tiltable angled lucerna ensures the oils' maximum.

A handsome & scarce complete original piece- fully functional as well.

Height: 13.75"

Base Diameter: 5.00"

Weight: 1 lb. 14.5 oz.
