A slick & unique Edwardian Onyx & Diamond Inlaid Gold & Platinum ring. A Marquis-cut, polished Onyx cabochon (weighing over two and a half carats) is bezel set in a filigreed 18K yellow gold mount. Inlaid in the Onyx is a Platinum star with a 1.25mm basket-set, round Diamond. Rope, ribbon, and knurled triple-filigree. English-made, circa 1901-1915. All natural, earth-mined, antique gemstones.

Onyx has been used in jewelry since the time of ancient Egypt. This specific-style, also called a "mourning ring" was popularized in the late Victorian-era with Queen Victoria popularizing the style after Prince Albert's death in 1861. Victorian mourning rings were  primarily made from yellow-gold with pearl-inlay.

The incorporation of Platinum, delicate lace-like filigree, and the addition of a diamond rather than a pearl narrows this piece firmly in the Edwardian era.
