U.S. Maritime Commission Stadimeter Boxed Set dated 1942. First invented in 1854 by U.S. Navy officer, Bradley Allen Fiske. Stadimeters are optical rangefinders, used much like sextants. They were carried on large warships throughout WW1 and WW2. By knowing the heights of various ships, navigators could use this device to measure the distance from these ships, allowing correct maneuvers necessary to staying in formation. Original lenses intact. Sold in original dove-tail oak box, with 2 spare lenses (one mirror has some delamination, please see photos). Manufactured by Ajax Engineering Co., the primary Stadimeter manufacturer for the U.S. Military throughout WW2.

Both Plaque on Box & Instrument Label Read:

'U.S. Maritime Commission Stadimeter; Mark II. Mod. O. Ser. 781; Contract No. MCc-2472, 1942; Ajax Engineering Co.; Chicago, IL'.
