1891-1903 Telluric Table Globe by Rand McNally
An incredibly scarce 12-inch Rand McNally & Co. Telluric Globe; This terrestrial globe incorporates additional features in the stand to demonstrate atronomical concepts, like seasonal variations and their effects on length of night and day. Full metal and "Circle of Illumination", with metal semi-circular band at equator, and engraved hour circles on poles.
Canted on a 23.5 degree inclination arm within a round, central Iron base. A 360-degree rotatable pointer within a round, green-painted, curved-food cast-iron stand with paper calendar and zodiac. Oval-shaped overlabel reads 'Donohue & Henneberry, A Chicago School Supply Firm', which assists in dating to pre-1903. A Rand McNally catalogue of the time claimed "this apparatus combines in one device, the best form of Globe and simplest and most practical form of Tellurian".
Oceans are a combination of Green and subtle Blue, Landmasses colored in darker Creams and Green, with Outlines thinly lined in Black, Mountain ranges indicated via Hash-marks. Major rivers, cities, regions, and bodies of water are labeled. The Equator, Ecliptic, and Equinoctial lines are shown via graduated, Yellow-colored lines. Isothermal lines for January colored Blue, July colored Red. State lines within the United States are highlighted in Yellow. Oval Analemma in Pacific Ocean.
From the Eastern portion of Oklahoma being labeled Indian Territory, this dates no earlier than 1891. Also of note, Central Europe labeled as "Austro Hungarian Monarchy" (prior to 1914). Coast of Antarctica only partially mapped, reflecting the current latest Cartography of the time.
Donohue & Henneberry, a Chicago book publisher founded by William P. Henneberry and Michael A. Donohue in 1878, traded under the name 'Donohue & Henneberry' until 1903. After which, Hennneberry exited the company and Donohue then traded as 'M.A. Donohue & Company'.
