On it's interior, an icon of the Twelve Great Feasts- this panel depicts: The Resurrection/Anastasis (The Descent into Hell), The Ascension of Christ, The Old Testament Trinity, & The Dormition of the Virgin.
On it's exterior, a slanted footrest empty cross; with the slant symbolizing the repentant thief on the right, and the condemned thief on the left . Tools used to torture Christ can be seen next to the cross- a sword and vinegar-soaked sponge. Adam's skull sits at the base of the cross. Jerusalem's walls and towers can be seen in the background.
