The first widely used radio receiver, this antique crystal radio (or crystal set) is a truly rare find. Russet bronze with raised fiber coil tube on brass pedestal. Originally invented in 1874, this particular BMS Pandora model dates to about 1920. Made by the Brooklyn Metal Stamping Company of New York. Early style spring bar with ball slider and binding post. Complete with detector arm. In all crystal sets, specialized headphones were required for audible transmission. This BMS Pandora includes ‘Made Expressly for NRI’ engraved headphones. Precursor to the invention of amplifying receivers, which became popular in the mid-1920’s.
