Interesting Flemish/Dutch Spout Lamp, or "Snotneus" (Dutch for "runny nose"); invented in Flanders and the Netherlands during the middle ages. This particular piece is of Flemish origin and dates to the late 1700's. Composed of hand-rolled brass.

Intended for use with whale oil; an expensive necessity of the day. This utilitarian design ensures not a drop goes to waste with a built in drop-catcher & font reservoir to receive any amount of unburned, or overfilled oil.

The removable oil reservoir is refilled by removing the press-fit, finial-topped lid. A wick is placed inside the upward-slanting tube, with the extending spicket used to recycle oil down into the font's reservoir/well.  Conical base with scalloped back-plate & mounting hole makes certain this piece was used as a hand-carried and wall-mounted device.

A rare surviving early example of Flemish tinsmiths. Fully functional, original piece. Original & unpolished patina (could be polished for free if customer requested).

Height: 13.75"

Base: 5.00"

Reservoir: 2.25"

Weight: 2 lbs. 4.5 oz.

Please Note: All lamps are stored/photographed without oil or wicks. Three New Wicks Included with Purchase. Oil must be sourced independently.
