Original late 19th Century Color Lithograph Print, 'Chart Of The World' by Sir William Peck, notable Scottish astronomer and scientific instrument maker (1862-1925). This fine lithograph is printed on heavy woven paper, with a satin finish. Represented are both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, this piece was used to demonstrate latitude's affect on a day's length. Professionally framed in an early 20th century ornate carved wooden frame, with custom crimson matting that pairs elegantly with the frame's guilt edging and vermillion trim. Wear on frame is consistent with age.
Title: "CHART OF THE WORLD, ON THE STEREOGRAPHIC PROJECTION, Showing the length of the longest and shortest days at different latitudes; The difference of time between different places; and the principal Observatories of the World. "
Published by Gall & Inglis, Edinburgh in 1890 for Peck's Popular Handbook and Atlas of Astronomy. This book was a very useful astronomical guide book, and aimed to help owners of telescopes use theirs most effectively. Longitude East and West are shown in hours, North and South Latitudes are marked on respective hemispheres. There are many fascinating features of this chart, most noticeably, the South Poles' lack of Antarctica.
